Module One:  What do Authors do and how do they do it.

What students will learn

Students will begin their journey into the literary world where they will learn about Authors and how they begin the creative process of narrative writing.

How will students be successful.

Through graphic organizers, discussions and creative inquiry, students will recognize authors intentionally choose materials to help them express their words and purpose. During the module, students will practice cooperative learning through authentic activities and student-student suggestions.

Sequence

The module begins with a KWL chart where students will discuss what they know about Authors and what they would like to know. As the module progresses students practice comparing and contrasting an Authors purpose by analyzing three books: one persuade, one that inform and another which  entertains readers (PIE). As the module progresses, the students will begin to learn the process authors goes through when creating a story. As the module ends the students will choose the wordless book they will be using to Author their own stories.

Assessments and how they directed lesson planning

  •  Story Elements Sort. This activity was used for an pre-assessment ( Elements, sequencing, and character traits) as well as an informative assessment focusing on PIE.

  • Student Sentences: After the students selected their books and skimmed the illustrations they all four did a quick write explaining what their purpose for writing will be.  (PIE)

Next Steps

All four students identified their purpose for writing. However, the students need to continue to work how an Author persuades readers. Next step is to move to module two and keep reinforcing "persuade" through discussions.
